EXHIBITION
IEHERBETOAN
This project was made during a minor called ‘What is Fashion’. In this minor I took the opportunity to work on a personal project. My previous projects always referred to a social topic. Usually quite intense and often related to a current situation in society. I felt the urge to make a statement and tell an (in my opinion) important story. I wanted to wake people up and set them to change the world, just as much as I wanted to do that myself.
Now that I had the time to do some serious research I decided to change it all up and start a very personal project. This project is about the connection I have with the female generation in my family. My mother, my grandmother and her mother. Creatives all three of them. A lot of my inspiration comes from them. In particular my grandmother. Sadly, she passed away about five years ago.
I didn't get to see her very often, but when I did, I felt like I was in paradise. I have never met someone as proud as my grandmother.
In this work I refer to her. It includes her amazing sense of taste in fashion and interior. It is a true ode to my grandmother. I shared a lot of old pictures and objects that belonged to her. Using those objects as the basis of my design and working towards an installation.
This project was also a kind of therapy for me. When I lost my grandmother, life was one big chaos. I had no time or space to grieve. There are many moments when I wonder why I react in a certain way or why I just can't understand something. Working on this project made me realize that most of those moments relate to the inability to cope with her loss. During these months, I opened myself up and pushed myself to feel emotions from the past.
Missing her as the greatest emotion.
