EXHIBITION "FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH"
More than 100 billion new garments end up in wardrobes around the world every year. At the same time, consumers annually dispose of 92 million tons of textiles. It makes the clothing industry one of the most polluting sectors in the world.
But what are we actually throwing away? And what happens when we value our clothes more? Will those garments continue to be worn in the future?
In this project I investigate whether I can restore the value of clothing by talking to the owner and the garment and creating new items from the existing clothing. After reminiscing and looking at the throw-away clothes with the candidates, I started collecting, archiving, tearing apart and reconstructing.
I've tried everything to manipulate the fabrics and come up with a completely different design. I found that when I took apart a piece of clothing, flat shapes emerged that led to interesting shapes. Those shapes were my inspiration to create new designs.
By staying in conversation during the making process, I added personal elements in the material processing. The existing clothes out of the bag are now a language for new designs that are worth wearing again.
